Fitness trackers/mindfulness apps for wellbeing. Does anyone have experience?

My daughter's OT suggested getting a fitness tracker (eg FITBIT or similar) as a tool for encouraging her to be aware of her fitness, but also as a way of tracking her types of sleep, as she is often exhausted all day.  Having also completed recently a training in mindfulness to help combat constant anxiety we wondered about acquiring a Fitbit which also has breathing exercises as an option.  I have heard that some peole can be allergic to the straps, and also am aware that my daughter really doesn't cope with anything round her wrist for very long.  Having looked at several online, including others which can attach with a clip, I'm confused as to which direction to take  -  a simple one for £20 or something like the Fitbit Charge 2 at £113 which has more sophisticated programmes.  I'm a bit of a tech virgin so would love some feedback.  Has anyone found these useful tools to encourage personal fitness/motivation/wellbeing either for themselves or for someone they care for?

  • Thank you so much Markliddle - that's some really useful information.  I will keep all informed how we proceed and what the outcome is.  Exciting times! Thank you.

  • Hi Pinky Perky,

I currently wear a Fibit blaze and find it a very useful tool. The Fitbit Blaze, along with the Charge HR not only measures your heart rate, but also your steps, workouts and sleep patterns. Which tracker you pick really depends on what activities your daughter would like to track.

If steps & exercise are your daughers main priority. You can get a Fitbit Zip or Fitbit One for under £40. These can be clipped onto you clothes, or put in a pocket and don't need to be worn around the wrist if your daughter isn't comfortable wearing a watch.

A fitbit Flex & Ultra offer the same as the Fitbits mentioned above, but they can also record sleep. However, you do need to wear these on your wrist in order for them to work correctly. A Charge HR does everything mentioned, but also comes with a heartrate monitor, but this is mainly used when working out to calculate how many calories are being burnt. Prices for these vary between £60-£110

If your daughter really doesn't want to wear anything around her wrist, but wants to record her sleep. I would recommend a sleep tracking app for her mobile phone. These can cost as little as £3. All you need to do is keep the phone on your night stand as you sleep and the app does the rest.

    Hope this helps :-)
