Chewing things

I have an habit of chewing the string on a hooded jacket and chewing a part of a keyring.

What kind of things can people with AS buy to try to get themselves out of habits like the one i have mentioned above??

  • I always chew plastic. Biro pen tops are the best lol

I am forever picking up anything plastic like bottle tops, one of the childrens tops and i chew through a million pens.

Chewing gum or a food just doesnt do the same thing. Some times my mouth gets quite sore and cut but its never occured to me to stop. People do think I am very odd but I dont really care.

I also went through a stage of eating little stones and rocks. I did mess my teeth a little but lucky i havent done that for a while. Will be interesting to here what other people have to say on the topic.

  • I buy toothbrushes with soft and hard bits on the handle and chew the hell out of them! You can buy special chew things on the net, google heavy blankets uk and there's a place that sells them... I don't try to get myself out of the habit... it really helps me sooth myself and stops me from feeling pain and tension from over stimulus. Alternatively, if chewing isn't going to be easy in certain environments.. dried fruit can help or you can try resting more regularly in quiet places until you calm down. You're chewing for a reason... listen to your body. Hope this helps.
