working with 2 High Functioning Autistic Gentlemen

First off, if this is in the wrong place please move it to the right place. Sorry..

Ok, I'm working with 2 High Functioning Autistic Gentlemen.  I'm enjoying working with them. we're trouble shooting inventory issues. They prep our gear before the rest of the crew starts and build merchandise pallets as needed.

They work hard and only really have issues when 2+2 don't add up.  They're blunt, truthfull and work well together. They're also the only reliable people on the crew, besides myself.

Now the problem, On the 2nd day of working with them, I noticed the discouraged frustation they get when 2+2 aren't adding up. I went to check out the issue. they point out the Problem. I note it as it's nothing they have done wrong and its part of the stuff we're out to fix. then I asked "Do they know of more of these issues like this?"

They schooled me, Not only did they school me. One of them keeps a journal of sorts, when he talked to their Superviser/ Foremen. so somewhere between 40-60% of our job is solidly noted as issues solved! Then next day he brought his other notebooks 90% of the job is Identified.

Part of my job is letting the General Manager know what the issues are and how to correct them. I submitted copies of the journals with explanation on how to read it. I also put credit where credit was due! the journals prove my guys tried to get nearly all the issues fixed months ago, some as long ago as March.

The other point I made. nearly all the issues are in 3 sections, my 2 guys almost exclusively pull the orders from these 3 sections. I think they are getting sabataged.

Now I'm in trouble with my 2 guys,  They're mad at me, because they had to talk to the General Manager.

In the past my guys worked closely with someone who retired the first week of march, They have not really been supervised since then, But I don't think they need it.

1st, They have pointed out, I have broken their trust. I never intended too, nor do I know how i did? or am I missing something?

2nd, I know they got bonuses checks from the GM. So why are they mad at me?

3rd, How do I avoid trust issues in the future?

Any help would be appietated,

Bud in USA.

  • Hi Bud

Its fantastic that you value and appreciate the way these men work. I wish there were more people like you. You're a star.

Perhaps you ran into trouble with them because you did somethig they didn't expect. They didn't know you had to talk to the manager. Most likely they have not had very good experiences with authority in the past and were fearful of what could happen.

We do like to know exactly what will happen and if anything unusual happens our default response is fear. Perhaps explain to them that you didn't understand how they would feel and it wasn't your intention to upset them. Promise to explain changes from the norm in future before they happen.
