Noise sensitivity at work.

I have never been formally diaganosed, but tick the boxes for ASD. I am noise and motion sensative, and work in an environment with lots of noise and movement. I can handle this most of the time, and when things get too difficult I take a short break, or when able to, move to a less busy location.

The problem is some of my work colleagues occasionally shout at one another, or make silly noises. This is very bad for me.

One particular colleague makes a very loud scretchy noise because he finds it funny. He scteches very loudly in a reverbarating high pitch. It instantly puts me into meltdown, and I can't think. It also raises my anxiety levels, because I know how much it distrubs me, and fully expect him to repeat it a few minutes later. When other colleagues tell him to shut up, he just laughs about it. Even a manager told him off, and he started again the next day.

It has gotten to the point where, if I am working near him I get anxious, I was late for work a few weeks ago because I was too anxious to leave my home.

How do I deal with this, telling him to shut up does not work, reporting colleagues is not considered cool, I don't want to discuss medical problems at work as colleagues will just take the micky.

  • I can really relate to this, we have a recent addition to the team. He can touch type very quickly, but does it with an odd rythm which drives me mad.

Another colleague has a very annoying an loud sound on his email notification. Sometimes he gets so many email it just goes off continually. Others in the office find it annoying, but a colleague just told him in a loud and aggressive voice to switch it off because it is very annoying. He did. I am sure if I did the same, he would just ignore it and I would look the odd one out.

There is another significant problem in our office. Nearby there is a constuction site, and they need to drive these massive steel piles into the ground. with a "diesel hammer". You would not beleive what kind of noise this makes in the office. Again really drives me nuts, problem is it happens at sporadic times in the day; and the works are going on for nearly 2 years.

The only solution I have come up with is to use noise cancelling headphones, but the only ones which are any good are expensive and finances are short. I know you can get the ear buds, but I just find them unconfortable
