tv on as background noise for my daughter

hello all, i just want to ask a few opinions on my suspected asd 6 year old.

I have come to agree that she has tv/white noise on of a night time to help her to settle to sleep and that is working brilliantly so far, but my question is about the day time.

i have tried putting on music low for her whilst she goes about her day to day in the house, but that has not worked, and she seems to favour the tv on low, she will choose what she wants on, then leaves it on and just walks about doing what she is doing (playing, eating well, sitting and all calm behaviours)

If i turn it off her behaviours change to a more negative, as though she is just lost and not having a clue about what she is doing.

My family are very negative about her behaviours, even to the point that they dont believe there is anything going on, so i just get accused of being lazy and her sitting in front of the tv all day and night, which is not the case as she is clearly not sitting and watching it, but it is the background.

could anyone having the same experience give me a bit of advice please? is this ok to do? is it a learned behaviour that she is just used to and now doesnt like the quiet that i would need to try and change bit by bit?

  • I find that having a TV on as background noise cuts out a lot of the unexpected or irritating noises, so is soothing. 'White noise' I think they call it, but it seems to help me relax and reduce irritability.

  • its the light from the tv that s not contusive to sleep. Why don't you download a free white noise app for your phone and use that. It is the same noise as the tv makes but without the light source.

  • that is some help, thank you. it is hard because i am learning quite a lot about asd and because it is such a wide spectrum i have found that with my 6 year old it is picking out bits from this, bits from that and maybe second guessing a few more.

because of her age and her asd communication is quite hard sometimes. i wish she could just tell me :(

  • I do the same thing. I don't know why, but I get some comfort from having the TV on, although I do sometimes have Radio 4 Extra on the TV instead. I'm almost convinced that it's preferable to the other 'outside' noises that would otherwise bother me. Certainly, when the world is 'quiet', I still find a sound source, however quiet, a better option to 'blank' out the tinnitus I have and that seems to be common.

Most days I listen to music, mostly on my headphones, and there are times when I just put on a set of ear-defenders and go about my business in the house. Sometimes, I just curl up under a blanket to cut out noise and light, for some respite.

It's the background noises from outside that are the worst, especially the 'sudden' noises or things that are especially shrill. My sensitivity varies, of course, but at it's best (least) I'm still sensitive to invasive sound.

    Any help?
