19 year old with Aspergers new to forum

Evening everyone(or shall I say morning as its 3:10am as I type haha) I've decided to take it upon myself to join the community and see if there is many like-minded people with Asperger's or similar conditions out there to talk to.

I am a 19 year old male from Cleethorpes in North East Lincolnshire and I was diagnosed with ASD 13 years ago this summer. Over the years I have had many difficulties with regards to my social interaction skills, understanding body language etc. Which has had such a negative profound effect on maintaining friendships and intimate relationships. 

How I view Asperger's syndrome is like seeing the world purely in black and white(if any other aspies out there would agree). You can't usually differentiate between jokes, sarcasm, irony or if the person you are speaking to is being serious, which complicates things a lot. This is mainly how it affects me, so its usually different for everyone.

One classic trait of Autism, which a lot of people have, is a highly enthusiastic interest. My main interests are Cars, vintage military aircraft and engines, for which I am very runnel visioned in terms of my unconditional enthusiasm.

Well I hope I haven't bored you by now as I would be interested in sharing some experience stories from similar people like myself, hope to hear from you all very soon!

  • There are other people on the spectrum who post here regularly, offering invaluable perspectives, so you are welcome here. There is also one section about interests and hobbies.

    There is a UK based forum (not for parents/carers unless they are also diagnosed as or believe themselves to be autistic) called Aspie Village www.aspievillage.org.uk

    There is an annual autistic run conference (UK) called Autscape and there is a chat list on their website too. In case or anyone else reading is interested, bookings for the conference are open til this Saturday as it happens. You can find out about it at www.autscape.org 

    The is more happening on Wrong Planet, though mainly USA based. Not exclusively though - there are some UK based people. There is also an adolescent autism section.

    The links on NAS site should include more aspergers/autism sites and forums, in addition to those focussed on parents and carers.

    From your post i think you're looking for aplace to  discuss your interests and experiences with other autistic people. These fora mainly function as support for parents and carers and not really as chatrooms. You might have more luck at http://wrongplanet.net/

    Its based in the US but is exclusively for us and our concerns.

    One small thing, your post mentions a lot of things you find hard or have problems with. I bet there are a pile of things you find easier than other people or are really good at. We just aren't encouraged to define ourselves with reference to those things but they are part of being autistic too.
