Forgiveness

I understand very well the concept of asking for forgiveness when you have done something wrong or someone tells you that you have hurt them... but I have a lot of discomfort in saying sorry without knowing why I am apologizing... and I have the impression that it irritates the people around me. I explain that in order to sincerely apologize and not do it again, I need to know precisely why I am doing it... otherwise I apologize without even knowing why I am apologizing... But it's the same thing again and again...it's ridiculous.... I have the impression that they believe that I ask why to be sure if it's worth it for me to ask for forgiveness for it... but that's never the case.... if someone tells me that I hurt them I'll always ask for forgiveness.... but I find it useless to ask for forgiveness without even knowing what I did.... and not to be able to apologize in an appropriate way for the situation....am I alone? What do you do when it happens? I don't want to be in conflict with anyone but saying sorry without even knowing why I am sorry seems stupid and very not sincere...

  • One of the problems nowadays is that there seem to be far more situations requiring an apology than in the past, as the current social climate means more people may take offence according to today's norms. The trouble is, whereas in the past there was general agreement on what was considered offensive, today people’s views on what is in bad taste - and therefore warrants an apology - can vary widely.
