[Content warning: discussion of rape and sexual assault] –Russel Brand, GUILTY

Of rape and sexual assault, has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Monday, to what the judge called a significant prison sentence. The Met have said they have to further cases against him that are before the CPS.

I really hope this case shines a light on the men who think they're entitled by fame to abuse any woman they choose.I hope the person who's currently asking the courts to stop him being named as a sexual abuser, because he might "try and kill himself" if named, gets told, no and that freedom of the press matters and that the women he's alledged of assaulting can have their day in court after a full and thorough investigation.

This comes on top of TWO cases currently before the courts of men accused of drugging their wives, raping them, photographing and filming them and asking other men to come and do the same.

I think Madam Pelicot has opened the floodgates on the amount of depravity some men are capable of. Apparently its quite a common fantasy among men, to want to have sex with an unconious woman!

  • One of the things that interests me with this thread is that with the exception of Sharon Mod, who's posting because of her job, that all the posts I can see are from men and none appear to be from women and I'm wondering why that is?

Could it be that even here women are afraid to speak up for fear of being gaslit and/or judged?

  • I understand your interest in reactions to this from a male versus female perspective on this topic, but I’m not so certain that’s why there is a trend in responses from men on this thread in particular. It could even just be as simple as we have less women that are reading the threads today than usual.

I think - given some of the other threads I’ve participated in - it’s probably a little obvious why I’m here. I’m a critic of how sex education is approached or outright denied to teens. Young men should be exposed to stories like this to understand fully that consent is always important. Autistic young men in particular, who may not fully comprehend the concept.

I mean, take Christine Chandler (Chris-Chan) as an example. Back when she was an Autistic male teen, she/he had a wildly perverse and well-documented obsession with sex, which was fueled solely by misconceptions fed to her/him by internet trolls rather than a formal education. Even after her gender change, it still led her down the road towards eventually raping her own mother with dementia (since she could not effectively give consent). I think had she heard of horror stories like the Brand situation and received proper counseling rather than having trolls feed into her having a warped view of sex, that particular crime could have been prevented.

That’s not to say that Brand wouldn’t have done what he did if sex education were improved. It probably wouldn’t have influenced him in particular, honestly. He knew what he was doing was dreadful and kept going back to it because he thought he could get away with it. I know improvements to sex education will not fix everything, but I believe the likelihood of misunderstanding being a factor in crimes like these would be less.

  • I haven't commented because I have little to add. However, as you've prompted me... back in the late 60s, the first women's refuge was opened close to where I lived. I read Erin Pizzy's book about the work and supported it. Years later, I gave to my local refuge while I lived in that town. I've read many books on domestic abuse and have spoken about it in real life, as well as keeping up on mean murdering their wives and children when said wives gained the courage to leave them, cases of male rape and the various celbrity abusers who have hit the headlines over the years. I've studied paraphilia, rape and abnormal psychology. The Pelicot case was horrendous and I applaud Madame Pelicot for exposing this depravity.

Fifty years ago, when I was working for the predecessor to the DWP, I encountered an educated woman who married a French film director. He attempted to abuse her on the first night as a married couple. She ran out of the house, was ignored by the police she called (back then, it was regarded as a 'domestic' and none of their business) and never went back. Moving forward 40 years, I was one of a few who supported a young woman suffering abuse for a coupel of years, until she gained her freedom. Thankfully, she found a lovely woung man, got married and is very happy.

I suffered serious non-physical abuse at the end of one relationship and put up with it (with help) because had I walked out of the house before we sold it, it would have led to a series of injunctions to force a sale and I have no doubt he would have trashed the house. As that would have seriously damaged me, I preferred to cope with a limited period of abuse to ensure that, once the house was sold, I could forget him for the rest of my life rather than live with the effects of his potential actions haunting me for many years. It was highly unpleasant in many ways, but when the house was sold, I was entirely free of the b*****d.
