Christmas!

How does anyone cope with Christmas and New Year social expectations?  Although I have very few friends, there's the obligation to buy presents which seems to have become swapping boxes of chocolates, chocolate biscuits or bottles of something.  Not forgetting the 'unwanted/unneeded' gifts.  Christmas cards to people you don't 'know'.

Fortunately (or not) we don't have any extended family who we feel obliged to invite for Christmas dinner - just as well as cooking is just not my thing!!

Now, I face a dilemma - hubs is a social animal which goes against the grain of us AuDHD'ers.  Another, sort of, fortunate thing is that we have a 'holiday lodge' on an Isle of Wight holiday park, so we leg it down there.  Yes, parties, but somehow the 'friends' we have down there are few and far between, plus they're not neighbours and seldom see them, so when I make a complete idiot of myself it's not as bad as being at home.  I cope by having too many bevvies and spending all my time on the dance floor.  I know they think I'm crazy down there, so being crazy and old kinda lets me get away with it - well that's what I keep trying to tell myself!

What do you do?

  • Given my 30 years in supermarket retailing and coming from a traditional Rural Irish Catholic background, I feel that Christmas, the time of Christ’s Birth, has become way too commercialised in recent decades - living alone in the U.K. 25 years myself, I focus far less on the material side (cards, presents, food, decorations, etc) and more on the spiritual and religious aspects, as my Catholic faith has become more important to me, especially since Covid and following my diagnosis - I attend Midnight Mass and Christmas Day Mass (which is Traditional Mass in Latin, not Vatican II) - I usually have a phone or video call to family in Rural Ireland, avoiding most of the drama of the commercial aspects of Christmas

  • Good for you.  Although I'm not Catholic I agree that Christmas should be a celebration of Christ.  I do love the joy, beautiful decorations, etc, but feel we've lost the meaning of it all.  But then, thanking God and Christ is not just for Christmas, His creations are something we should be amazed at and celebrate every day.

Ooo, a tad OTT?  Everyone is entitled to their own personal views regarding religion and I openly welcome that, so no offense intended to those who hold their own beliefs.  My relationship with God is personal to me and it's not my place to judge!

  • I'm fine socialising at home and love to have a houseful of people to cook for, I only buy presents for family, including my animal family, which includes two sets of "grandkitties".

I like havig lots of greenery and lights in the house, most of it fake which gets put away every year and a well decorated tree, which to me represents the tree of life and the fruits of the earth.

Luckily I don't have to socialise outside of home, or I might have to have a "funny tummy".
