Trump is trumped

  • And also Trumped by his own wife. Bless the girl, she seems to have hidden depths.

  • I do find that whole situation weird. I can’t put my finger on why that feels so surreal.

I read up on that area’s woes just a few weeks before I heard Melania was stepping in. It really sounded to me like Russia was purposely causing the humanitarian crisis and blaming it on the Ukrainians. Since Ukraine struggled to prove Russian interference, they were stuck pointing fingers at Russia and that made them look just as responsible.

That makes me think Melania may have went directly to the source of the problem: Russia. Given the Trump Administration’s ties to Russia, maybe her husband’s associates were aware that Russia was the true culprits behind the crisis?

What if she only met with Ukraine after already getting Russia to agree to back down?

Of course, that’s all speculation, but… This article you shared - which admits no one seems to know exactly what Melania’s role was in this agreement - only makes me more confused. To add onto the weirdness, the White House’s statement makes it sound as if Melania did this on her own accord. What?! Did she take confidential information about Russian activity and went loose cannon to fix it without approval?! What the hell is going on?!

  • Whatever the machinations, the end effect worked. We will never know what went on, but perhaps she used cunning to make Putin feel great by being 'humanitarian'. One of the oligarch's said that Putin needs to be given 'a way out' - ie merely stopping the war without 'winning' in some way would make him look weak. If Melania has actually found a psychological way to overcome his need to be 'great,' no matter what, then it works and she's a genius.

  • Reading up on the early history of Russia, it was started in Kyiv and "the Kyivan Rus", before spreading beyond it's Scandinavian roots and to what we know today as Russia

  • Sadly, I don’t think there is any easy way out for Putin that doesn’t involve absorbing the Donbas into Russia (given the importance of Kyiv to the founding myth of Russia, I’m surprised he is willing to let it remain the capital of Ukraine).

Emperor Tiberius said of ruling the Roman Empire that it was like holding a wolf by the ears. I’ve thought for some years that Putin is in a very similar position.
