Jackdaw approved, should Rosebank be too?

I feel mixed about more drilling in the North Sea and I don't like the idea of more extraction and the environmental impacts of fosil fuel use, but I can see that we need gas and that it's better to get it from closer to home, although it will only give us 2% of our gas.

I do not agree with Rosebank being opened, I get that with whats going on in the Middle East is a problem, but any oil thats extracted will be sold on the open market and will do nothing to the cost of domestic oil and petrol prices.

What say you folks?

  • I don't see it as necessary. Like you say, we'll pay the global price anyway. Thanks, Maggie.

Labour did good things with the trains. I used to get coaches to airports - long journey times and discomfort - because trains were so much more expensive. Now, I can just get the train.

That's because Labour put money into the railways. Would be nice if they out even more money into renewable energy sources.

I'm in Germany right now and, as I travel about, I always see so much more focus on renewable energy from the train. Wind turbines and solar fields. There's less wind turbines in Bavaria than up north, and I read that's because Bavaria had a policy that limited how close wind turbines could be to villages, and Bavaria has a lot of villages. I ask you, how often do you really see renewable installations in the UK? In my home town, the Tory MP actively blocked a wind farm off shore. Why? Because he had major interests in oil firms.

So much more could be done by the UK, but I can't help feel Labour are pandering a bit to the right wing parties.

I could, of course, be wrong. Just my thoughts.

  • We have quite a few solar farms here, one of the big concerns is that they're being placed on good farm land thats now been taken out of food production, we may be strengthening our energy security but at the expense of our food security.

Unlike many I like wind turbines, I find watching them really relaxing and I'd far rather have wind turbines than nuclear.

I think if the governments really serious about energy security and green jobs, then it should make all new homes have to insulated to a good standard, have solar panels and heat pumps with underfloor heating. New buildings could be orientated north south so as they could take maximum advantage of the sun.

But all this relies on us being able to connect to the national grid, which has been ignored for way to long, the wait times for connection are to long and the whole thing needs upgrading.

People like me continue to use gas for heating and stove top cooking because we have so many power cuts because our infrastructure is old, many places round here still have those old poles with junction boxes on top that look like Daleks trying to hide in old metal dustbins.

I think Labour are trying to appeal to its red wall industrial base as much as appeasing right wing parties.
