Brexit round two?

Looks like Andy Burnham would like to reopen the whole Brexit debate. I didn't want us to leave, but now we have I don't want to go back to it and have all the life sucked out of politics again, by endless BS from both sides.

I do think a closer relationship with Europe would be good for many things, including trade, a better trade relationship would improve out economy, maybe not by bringing in big multinationals in to invest here, but it would help all the small, artisanal businesses to trade again without the expense and barriers, it would help enormously. Government only ever seems to think about big, multinational businesses, rarely about the small and independent businesses, who quietly go about their the trade and rarely if ever get represented even though they create employment pay tax here and contribute to a vibrant economy.

One thing I do know to have been true was Russian interferance, back in the day I was on another site and all these "new members" popped up all spouting anti-EU, pro-Russia stuff, they rarely responded to anything not Brexit related or if they did they somehow brought it back to that. I challenged one and said it sounded like a Russian bot and magically all the "new members" disapeared. That was only a tiny site, so I can't imagine what it was like on the bigger ones like faceache or twatter.

  • I am trying not to bite on such contentious threads but this one is too close to my heart to remain silent on.

My considered view is that voting for Brexit was an egregious act of economic, security, cultural and social self-harm by the UK. I campaigned and marched against it repeatedly and suspected we would regret it fairly quickly.

Not only has the effectiveness of our domestic politics and our business sector been damaged by it but those who seek to sow division, othering, hatred and violence in our beautiful set of nations have had a field day.

It is breaking my heart to witness this. I am the son of an immigrant woman, and proud to be an internationalist, an antiracist and an ally for other minorities and out-groups.

Geopolitics has moved on disturbingly and more of us have learned painfully who our friends now are not. The US is no longer reliable. It is time for us to reconsider our relationship with our neighbours in Europe in the light of a substantive body of fresh evidence and in the face of multiple hybrid acts of aggression and risks of military conflict.

I would recommend that our Government first continues at pace on its fresh course of helping people's standard of living as it is inequality that lies at the heart of social division, dissent and othering. A healed UK, with incipient fascism starved of oxygen, would prove a more attractive partner for our allies.

That's me out of words now.
