Going through adult AuADHD assessment.

Hi, I'm 42 and currently going through a neurodevelopmental assessment. ADHD indicators have already been identified, and autism is now also being explored, although I obviously don't have a diagnosis yet.

I'm finding the whole thing surprisingly difficult. Over the last few months I've started noticing just how much I've apparently been dealing with for most of my life without really understanding it — sensory overload, struggling with competing sounds, getting overwhelmed by people and noise, shutting down when I've had too much, difficulty actually getting myself to start things even when I genuinely want to do them, pretty intense emotional reactions, and needing a fair amount of time to recover afterwards.

The weird bit is that I keep swinging between "holy ***, this explains an awful lot" and "am I just seeing what I want to see and actually this is all anxiety/depression?"

I'm not really looking for anyone to tell me whether I'm autistic. I'm still going through the assessment and I'm quite happy to leave that bit to the professionals. I'm more interested in hearing from other adults who've been through something similar, especially people who got to this point later in life.

I'm also really not looking for another massive self-improvement project. Sweat smile I've spent quite enough of my life trying to figure out how to function properly. At this point I'd mostly like to understand what's actually going on and hopefully find some ways of making ordinary life a bit easier.

So I suppose I'm mainly looking to hear from people who've been in a similar position, and maybe get a bit of perspective while I wait for the rest of the assessment.

  • I have auadhd as well I was diagnosed last year, for me the learning process things just made sense, it wasnt really a massive revelation id heard about them and when I finally stoped blaming myself for things not working out and looked at it as a explanation to not hold yourself so painfully accountable for what keeps going wrong.

I feel its one of those things when you have it you just know and it doesnt really matter if you have a label as if that isn't the explanation it isn't really important as you still have the problem that affects so much of your life, it think it had a impact on my family as well, which I wasnt really expecting the were a few people who helped me on my journey who ended up reading the symptoms of the stuff I had and realised they also were suffering but it wasn't a thing in their day or just thought it was them not trying hard enough, so if you family are also helping you , its worth just seeing how their doing as this stuff is also hereditary .

its funny as even this last week I was still making revelations of behaviour patterns that were caused by autism that I though was smoothing else, after a certain point im not trying to "fix" or change anything I think it just causes more pain then good, id like to say self improvement is real and it works but I certainly would say that isn't true on a large scale you can try and tweak thing here and there but you will always still be your soul and you will still have your same struggles.

I know how you feel as ive been there I wish you well and if you have any questions feel free to ask im happy to help, good luck :)
