My story - part 1/2

hi guys

I was diagnosed with autism twice in 2024 once privately and then about a year and a half later I got a reminded that I’m on an NHS waiting list for an assessment and that missed appointments cost the NHS £300 so I had another assessment and you guessed it - was diagnosed again. I also have ADHD (6A05.Z)1 (314.01)2, subtype Inattentive, Impulsive/hyperactive, and Developmental Coordination Disorder (Dyspraxia) was told that I’m almost certain to be dyslexic and knowing how good (bad) I am at maths, an assesment for the fairly new dyscalculia is also on my radar …

having this diagnoses explains a lot .. nope who am I kidding IT EXPLAINS IT ALL.  But most importantly it was a sense of relief, a sense of relief because I finally realised that I’m not bad, lazy, pretentious or even stupid, I’m simply wired differently, I have severe deficits which make basic everyday functioning significantly harder than it would be for a neurotypical person, and although this doesn’t fix or make anything easier, it teached me that I can’t really fail in life as I was never destined to be on the roller coaster in the first place, if you know what I mean.

However I’m not here to talk about that, not at all, I am here because I’ve finally found courage and decided to speak out about the horrendous amount of abuse, neglect, and god knows what else the monster I had to call mother and her side of the family put me through just because I appeared to be different from what their vile and low as a cut summer grass standards expected me to be.

But before we delve in to it, let me give you some background.

I was born and spend the first 11 years of my life in the suburbs of the capital city of Europe’s poorest, most racist country and arguably one of the countries with the utmost disrespect for law and order - Bulgaria.

Our neighbourhood was officially called “Hope 4” but was  unofficially known as the “skinheads zone” because it was situated in the middle between villages and a gypsy ghetto, and local ultra white gangs used it as a hub from where they can control all three areas. Now just because I say this don’t think that people were terrorised or anything, in fact the only reason I’m even mentioning them it’s because my own mother would often pay these people to bother and threaten me, but I’m going to get in to this later on, for now let’s continue.

in the middle of my first year of school, a teacher would call my mother and tell her that my behaviour is not what would necessarily be what’s expected of someone in first grade and they called me over to the psychologist’s office and I remember this like it was yesterday, she made me draw my entire family in the form of an animals but also gave me a list with empty, white square boxes and asked me to do whatever comes naturally and I remember I just filled them in with paint.

Next thing I know is that my mother would have a short discussion with the psychologist and we’ll go home. She wouldn’t talk to me for an entire week afterwards and I wouldn’t know why and when I’d ask my dad he’d laugh and say “don't know, you know how she is” my dad was and still is a very social and easy going person whom liked his drinking.

A few days later my dad would be drinking at home and making phone calls to friends when my mother would come home angry I don’t know where from but I do know it wasn’t from work as she wasn’t working at the time. Because she wasn’t home that night my dad had served me and my sister food in the sitting room rather then the kitchen and what he liked doing was throw food on the table (a clean table of course) rather then put it in to plates which got my mother really angry as she had explicitly told him not to do that multiple times in the past as it is really hard to clean food from glass once stains dry or something like this.

By this point my sister had gone to bed so my mother broke her non talking to me spree and grabbed my arm and chucked me out of the flat on to the stairs and said “go away” she would then shut the door so hard that she didn’t realise it made it bounce and left it wide open which unfortunately made me hear all that there was to follow. She went in to the kitchen and by that time my dad had finished his calls so she stormed in and shouted “what are you doing” to which my dad replied “what does it look like I’m doing, I’m enjoying myself” after which she started loudly arguing about many things, about the food table, about mutual friends, about money, about happiness, when she finally uttered the words “oh yeah and your stupid son” to which my dad replied “what about my son” to which she started explaining things that I’d apparently done (most of which were not even true tbh) when she eventually said “and did you know that  out of all the things he can be, he has chosen to be different!!!” To which my dad responded “what are you on about he’s 5 years old?” When she said “that’s what that dumb skank said” (she was referring to the school psychologist,) “HE IS AN AUTIST!!!!!!” Now, autist technically means autistic but in some cultures the word autist has a hidden meaning, it still means that you’re different but it’s a different, different if that makes sense (to try to explain it let me put it this way, it means that you’re purposely choosing to do what the crowd and by the crowd I mean other people whom are meant to be on your level have been told explicitly not to do and are not doing) and in some cultures appearing to do things that seem out of the norm are not classed as a disability like they are in the UK, but can be the difference between life and death, and from that night on my mother started the most horrendous campaign of abuse against me which included but not limited to psychological, emotional, core identity abuse, locking in a rat infested basement, under feeding , and purposely neglecting me, constantly creating stories about me, constantly undermining me and showing me other boys my age as an example of how to be a man. But on one occasion I think she realised how out of the norm all of this was and pulled me aside and said “you need to fix yourself, look what are you making me do” she was talking to me almost as if I was a damaged toy from a shop that had the ability to self fix or alternatively would be thrown for scrap.

Later on that very year my parents would divorce as my dad had lost his anyway poor paying job coupled with the other issues they’ve had in a decision which was heavily influenced by my mother’s sister whom for long years had lived in Sweden.

The properly we resided in was the property of my grandmother whom had passed away and so it now was half my mother’s and half her sister’s, the reason the sister was so pushy for the divorce was because she didn’t want my dad to eventually persuade my mother to sell it so we could also move to a more developed country as if this was the case the money that the sister would get would be miserable due to the exchange rate which back then would of had her have about 2-3 months worth of whatever the national minimum wage was in Sweden at the time.

From that point on things would only take a turn for the worse as my mother’s attitude toward me would even further unprovoked-ly deteoriate but this would be far from unassisted.

i would be the first to tell you that I never, ever liked nor the sister nor her husband as the man was very strange and scary Iraqi man and the sister was down right evil.

Like most post communistic homes, we used to have two landlines at home, one in the kitchen and one in the sitting room.

After the divorce the two sisters would talk on the phone almost daily and quite often one of the subjects of the conversation would be I.  One of my mother’s biggest fears was that as I grow my autistic identity would become a very clearly visible difference, and she was also worried of how she can control me or like she once said in the phone “control it” like she was referring to a homeless animal she had sheltered and not her own son.

The reason my mother listened to her sister so much was because like most people in her position she automatically believed that because her sister lived in Northern Europe she knew more and that she was a higher entity if you may. Despite the fact that the sister sometimes talked pure and utter nonsense that even a 6 year old me knew, my mother always listened to her blindly because like many ordinary people she felt safe following the instructions of someone whom she felt was superior.
The sister would once say on the phone that my mother should avoid feeding me regularly as feeding me would literally feed my autistic identity which is absolutely shocking thing to say about your own nephew but also coming from someone whom lives in Sweden of all places as I recently discovered that Sweden is the most autistic friendly country in the world, so rather then sending us some useful and helpful tips for managing the condition she did the exact opposite in the pettiest of ways and this woman is a pharmacist btw (at least that’s what my mother claimed. Now, I know that a pharmacist is not a doctor, but still it is a profession in the medical industry and also you’re talking about your goddamn nephew for god’s sake! And for what ? I was already disadvantaged health wise, and economically, it wasn’t really a competition with her children at the time and I think she knew it but I think her fear was that perhaps one day this would change.

But enough about the sister and let’s talk about the husband for a bit now, one day the sister would advise my mother that her husband had said that If I misbehave an effective method to control me would be to put me in a close proximity of a large screen and make me watch bright lights and listen to loud noises which back then I thought “how is this a punishment!” but only recently I added 2 and 2 as I started educating myself about neurodiversity and found out that what she was referring to was sensory overload which is one of the worst things for an autistic brain.

It baffles me how they knew those things all the way back in 2006 and does that mean that countries like Sweden and Norway had more education and development about neurodiversity then the UK at the time?

(if there’s lots of interest I’ll tell part 2)

  • Hi, looks like I'm tge first to answer. I'm sorry, your story touched me. I used to hear the very same thing "fix yourself" reading your story made my eyes wet. It's awful how you were treated by your mom and her side of the family. At what age you moved to UK? You can share more of your story if you wish.

I also remember my teacher told my mom, she thinks that im autistic and my mom was furious about it. And once I asked about that conversation she was also angry.

  • Hi there.

Thanks for your reply, and I’m sorry about your experiences.

I’m glad that you find the forum helpful and I’m sorry that you’re having problems with getting a proper diagnosis (I read your post else where earlier) but I must say I’m a bit surprised as German healthcare whether private or national is touted as one of the world’s best, but then again I thought the same for the UK one and to be honest it is for the most part but in this specific field not offering a severity level is a bit strange as you don’t really know what support need you are without it …

I can see you’re an active user, so your thoughts on what I should do after I share the second part of my story would be important :)

    Part 2 :

The abuse would continue, until one summer in 2008-2009 when my mother would get an invite by her sister for an all expenses paid trip to the sister’s husband’s hometown of Baghdad, Iraq

Out of all the places where one can go on holidays she’s accept an invite to a war torn Islamic city like Baghdad …

Now, earlier on I mentioned that the few times I’ve seen the man, I didn’t really like him, he was violent, pushy and would loudly watch this very barberic news documenting channels with an almost obsessive intent which I’m gonna admit scared me, and it did so - a lot.

The reason I am mentioning this, it’s because I have no clue what occurred on that trip, but when my mother returned she just wouldn’t be the same person. She looked looked different, humbled, almost scared, it was almost as if she whitenesses things that she either shouldn’t have or that she didn’t expect to (now what I’m wondering to this day is whether it was because of the war as things that can be seen in an a war land can be scary - a completely understandable fact, or perhaps the more scary version that she saw this man and the other people around him do stuff that they shouldn’t have or she didn’t expect them to, but for my mother to be so humbled and act almost kindly it was very very very shocking to me. To say anymore then this in this particular subject on this forum wouldn’t be appropriate, as I believe the rest should only be shared in a professional setting and I am a man that takes people’s safety extremely seriously, when I was a child I had 2 dreams and no dream was bigger then the other. One was to be an actor and play a role in a tv series that would become a hit, and the other dream was to work something that helps keep people safe, whether that was the police or something else. So let’s skip this bit and move on.

After my parents divorce my mother’s relationship with my sister also got worse and I remember that she started picking on her for the most littlest things, as a growing female only 12 at the time my mother felt that my sister should do most if not all household work which my sister was not not happy about which caused some very serious and at times physical arguments between the two. However the perhaps more concerning suspicion I have, is that my mother forced my sister to see  local older men for what I can only imagine would of been sexual favours in exchange for cash as my mother was very vocal about her thoughts that if my sister wasn’t helping around the house then she should perhaps start contributing financially in some way, and if that truly was the case then that makes me even more disgusted then I already am of this woman .

Although I didn’t know what was happening at the time, I believe that my sister was complaining to my dad about these things as in around 2011 my dad told my sister that he was called by his great uncle whom had lived and worked in the UK most of his life but sadly had developed one of the most cruel diseases Parkinson’s and now needed around the clock care but complained that the care workers he was assigned were thieves, rude and else, so he wanted my dad to move over and look after him, in exchange he can bring his kids over so they can have a better future.

What is interesting is the fact that my mother didn’t care about my sister going and would say “the faster, the better”  but the idea of me moving TERRIFIED HER! - Because she would lose me one might think? - Hell no, it was because she was afraid of what I might say about what she was doing to me/ to us/ and what kind of a horrible person she was.

She wasn’t the only one terrified though, as her sister would often call and I remember this like it was yesterday - explicitly warn her that me moving shouldn’t happen under any circumstance.

In the year following my sister’s move,
                there would be constant arguments
between my parents about whether I
should move too coupled with input from
that witch her sister, whom was so
concerned about me moving that actually
invited us to Sweden (me and my mother)
as she heard that my dad would be
coming back to Bulgaria to sort some
documentation out and didn’t want him to
                 come and get me.

When leaving though she did something
which I remember to this day, her son had
one of these console games I believe the PS3 though I could be wrong, I never liked those consoles I’ve always preferred playing CS 1.6 on my laptop anyway, so what she did was just before we left for the airport she called me over and told me to go to the sitting room as there is pudding waiting for me, her son was at school, her husband was at work, my mother was outside , and what she must of done was she put one of her son’s games in my suitcase and when my mother returned from shopping called her over and said “look what your son has done” which my mother waited and only told me in the airplane and said that I didn’t deserve any holidays ever. without asking me of my point of view, without giving me the benefit of the doubt, without even for a second thinking that perhaps her sister lied.

My father would then start more actively pursuing the idea of me moving over and I’m not sure what happened but I do know her sister was saying that even if I was to try and tell someone what had happened no one would take me seriously or believe me and that I can’t prove it, but if I had stayed, my autism would of maybe become more aggressive and I would of become uncontrollable so they then changed their stance to that it would be better if I moved, and so I moved in 2012. And every single day since that day I’ve been wanting to tell the story but for some reason it never came together, it was never the right moment, I didn’t know how to make the approach and what not.

I remember that I was so used to mask my symptoms as per the force by my mother that when I moved over and the school I went to ran some assessments they couldn”t even find out that I was on the spectrum.

So for the next 5 years or so I’d live a somewhat normal life finally being away from my mother.

Until about 2018, when my mother a violent, openly pro Russian supremacist whom over the years has on multiple occasions talked what not about the West and countries like the UK, suddenly decided to move over exactly here, with a younger man she was dating called Ivan.

When she’d come over she’d attempt to contact me and get in touch with me, which I’d avoid at all costs so in order for my avoidance of her not to be awkward in front of people that we knew she had apparently told people that I had made some threats to the couple (which is funny as I’ve never even met them, and In total I’ve met my mother about 2-3 times since 2017, and one of those times was when my sister gave birth) when I heard this it angered me so I told the person whom told me it to tell her to go to the police, and apparently when they told her that, she changed the version or events to that she was actually referring to a third party and not about me.

because of this monster I’ve missed my nephew’s first 3 birthdays, I’ve missed Christmas get togethers, Easters, and what not.

When I was diagnosed with ASD and the rest in 2024 I made the mistake of telling certain people and the news reached my mother and on dinner parties where by the way the man she was dating had been apparently drinking to death and throwing bottles outside the window she has been saying that because I couldn’t make anything of myself (that’s what she thinks as she thinks that if there was something notable she would hear) I’m now going to pursue this “gay ***” (my mother’s definition of me exploring neurodiversity and learning why I can’t function) she would also in open company share her views that a man should be domineering, and that a real man just gets on with it and doesn’t look for excuses … This is a woman whom had also once told me that a real man should do no matter what to make ends meet even if that includes crime …

That’s not what I stand for.

I’m not perfect, I have been arrested a few times (don’t worry I’ve never hurt anyone or been to jail, more like general public offences staff) but those arrests are technically illegal I was told as I wasn’t provided an appropriate adult in my interviews so any information extracted from me as I’m vulnerable without an appropriate adult would of been illegal, I was only told this recently and people want me to appeal but I told them yes I can do but what’s the point, I already completed community services (they actually put me in a mixed group with violent offenders, which is also illegal as per the law if you’re autistic you should be placed in a single placement… but enough about this going back to the story and reaching its conclusion, I have lived in Britain for 15 years now, what thing I’ve learned is that when there is a wrong doing people expose, name and shame the people that have done it, and that’s what I feel I should do to my mother in order for the little autistic boy inside me to heal but having said that here come the big questions:

    1. Would someone believe me (how can I prove all of this) ?

    2. What can realistically be done about it?

(Those are things that happened around 20 years ago in a different country)

Then there comes the thing that as I said I want to do a job that helps keep people safe that’s what I’ve always wanted to do but this is a job that doesn’t appreciate publicity.

So my question is do I speak out, do I get it off my chest or do I wait and get to where I want to get to and just share this at clearance level?

The dilemma I’m facing is that if I speak out this could prevent me from doing what I’ve always wanted to do which is to help people at the highest level.

I must mention that the support I’ve received so far has been overwhelming, I have support letters from multiple organisations, there are also some excellent journalists that I’m sure would support me in speaking out like Chris Packham for example, I’ve watched his materials and they’re excellent. So all the support is out there for me

    What do you think ?
