barber fear

Does anyone else on this forum put off going to the barber, rationalizing that it's not really that important anyway and only go when the hair is becomes too long and irritating? I'm Ok when I've actually gone in and sat down but I suppose it's the anticipation that raises my anxiety and to stop that I don't go when I should.

Could you consider mgiving yourself a significant reward only when you have gone - something you may only do once every few months or so?

The rational is that you start to associate the reward with the event subconsciously and since you don't seem to find the event itself traumatic then it can slowly become a part of the reward process, thus stealing its negative association.

It is how I have dealt with these unpleasant routine events in the past (eg dentist appointments) and I now have no problem with doing these things. As you find their hold lessens then you can shift the reward to something else unpleasant if it works for you.

It is a good way of using your subconscious to fight the subconscious (in this case irrational) fears.

    Only my opinion of course.
