The Autistic Achievement Rulebook

Just quoting myself here from the 'Self Worth' thread:

'There is also the question of life achievements/stages eg. degree, career, buying a home, marriage, having children.

If we don't 'achieve' these stages, I think that can unfairly affect our sense of self worth.'

We say we haven't achieved the usual life stages but maybe they need to be different for us because we aren't so likely to just fall into those particular 'achievements'.

We can make our own.  Re-write the 'achievement rulebook'.

So, what do you see as an achievement for yourself in the light of your autism?

Or what do you think is an achievement generally for us autistic souls?

I will start with connection - I have connected quite profoundly I think with animals, insects and trees.

  • I struggled to answer your question as many of the things I think of as achievements could apply to non-autistic people too, e.g., qualifications. However, I will include them here anyway because I achieved some qualifications later in life, despite at one time believing it would be impossible.

I am able to research independently and to a high standard, on a topic of interest for extended periods of time, i.e., several years.

I am amazed that I have survived to now and live in a relatively stable environment on my own, with my dogs, in my own home, so that is an achievement. That’s another thing that at one time I didn’t think would be possible.

I connect deeply with dogs and horses.
