The Autistic Achievement Rulebook

Just quoting myself here from the 'Self Worth' thread:

'There is also the question of life achievements/stages eg. degree, career, buying a home, marriage, having children.

If we don't 'achieve' these stages, I think that can unfairly affect our sense of self worth.'

We say we haven't achieved the usual life stages but maybe they need to be different for us because we aren't so likely to just fall into those particular 'achievements'.

We can make our own.  Re-write the 'achievement rulebook'.

So, what do you see as an achievement for yourself in the light of your autism?

Or what do you think is an achievement generally for us autistic souls?

I will start with connection - I have connected quite profoundly I think with animals, insects and trees.

  • One thing that strikes me is that if you look at the conventional 'life achievements', some of which I have listed above, if you actually 'achieve' any of these then I think it's sometimes more of an 'achievement' than for an allistic person because they don't generally have the challenges we do (although they may have ones of their own).

An achievement for me can feel like I've managed to climb a mountain and put my flag at the top (metaphorically speaking as I would find a hill a challenge these days).

Out of the 5 things I've listed I only 'achieved' 2 and buying my own place was because of compensation from a traffic accident (not a recommended method) and marriage was in my 50s.
