Boarding Schools

That's a middle class+ dilemma. 

I would rather have not lived at home in poverty with my very unhappy parents and mentally unstable mother and gone to the roughest schools in the city in order to receive a very poor education whilst being severely bullied.

I agree but having the money for decent food and clothes and an escape route might have been good. 

Wearing hand me downs was one of the reasons for the bullying as there was no school uniform.

‘Money doesn’t make you happy, but it helps’, comes to mind, and is true in your case.
