Autism thoughts, bad press

I’m autistic, intelligent, many challenges throughout life

I don’t doubt I’m autistic with all my issues but there does seem to be a growing number of people who don’t understand, with all the bad press currently around

If you can hold a conversation, deemed intelligent, then why do some people doubt a diagnosis, I heard a couple talking saying” most people diagnosed aren’t autistic they just want to feel special”

it’s really frustrating

  • I think that if people were asked: "Would you rather be you or me (autistic)?" And they knew all the social and mental health struggles that come with it, they would say they want to be themselves.

After all, the world is much better fit for them.

Similarly, when people talk about those on benefit. If you can get the benefits, and also their problems, would you rather be you, or them?

Then that's not a deal or a lie anymore (excepting a minority of cases).

  • I agree. I also, generally, function well in society. But when I was diagnosed, pretty much everyone I know said something like "well I could have told you that"... It's the little things that people who know you well notice. The rigid structures and awkward stubbornness. Socially difficult etc (me).

I know exactly what you mean, and would say it's naivety and ignorance that spawns such comments that you mention
