Thanks for your reply. I've heard of freestyle stitching on a machine. To do it by hand you must be really creative. I knit but have had to add decorative stitches to an item I've recently made. I cannot tell you the amount of times I've tried and had to unpick due to uneven length and spaces! 
I've given up for the evening, lol. So doubly admire you for your stitching skill.
