Government announcement today that we should stock up on food etc

Here is the BBC article:

Besides extreme weather events there is the danger of cyber attacks and warfare.

We are very far in the UK from self reliance, as a country/set of countries.

I've heard of 'preppers' - people who have already stocked up a great deal of supplies for the event of extreme conditions - often in the US.

There are also people who own bunkers.

This thread is to share ideas about:

1.  Whether you will actually do anything

2.  If so, what will you stock?

and any other comments about the situation, which is the first I've experienced like this in my lifetime.

I am thinking back to my parents generation and WW2, rations etc.

  • On the news this evening, somebody asked “What’s the use of just three days’ worth of supples?”

While an answer to the question wasn’t supplied, I believe that “three days’ supply” is more about helping emergency services and local responders prioritise those most in need, and it’s probably clearer just to convey a set number of days rather than a vague “a few days’ worth”.

I’m really surprised that some people respond so negatively to the government’s advice. I’m not near public transport, so even if a water mains burst, or something contaminated the drinking water, I would need water. If I was sick or injured, I mightn’t be able to shop for food, so I think the advice is sensible on many levels.

  • I’m really surprised that some people respond so negatively to the government’s advice.

Someone will say it's scaremongering and then site instances where government advice hasn't been 'needed' in the past ie the emergency didn't occur.

    It's daft.

If one emergency doesn't occur another might.

It's like saying that we shouldn't wear a safety belt in a car as we may not have an accident.

On a balance of probabilities lots of disasters won't occur but what is wrong with being prepared if they do.

Sometimes twaddle heads do reckless things like swim in storms and climb mountains in hazardous conditions unprepared then volunteer emergency services risk their own lives to save them.

We aren't children and we should take responsibility for ourselves in order to ease pressure on emergency services if needed.

I am now stepping off my 'soap box'.

  • I think the response of so many people stocking up on rations and torches, shows not panic buying, but people who want to be prepared but didn't know how

  • I guess in part its a numbers game, if theres only one fo you then 3 or 4 tins of beans are plenty, but if theres a lot of you in the house then the numbers rachet up quite quickly, although I agree 300 tins of beans is excessive. I wonder if some people are getting competitive about it, a sort of I'm more prepared than you thing? But the psychology of panic buying is something I've never explored

  • Buts it heights spelt out for them. 3 days supplies that's like 3 to 9 tins and 2 to 4 leteres of water not 300 tins ans 2 to 4 packs of 3 l water
