Government announcement today that we should stock up on food etc

Here is the BBC article:

Besides extreme weather events there is the danger of cyber attacks and warfare.

We are very far in the UK from self reliance, as a country/set of countries.

I've heard of 'preppers' - people who have already stocked up a great deal of supplies for the event of extreme conditions - often in the US.

There are also people who own bunkers.

This thread is to share ideas about:

1.  Whether you will actually do anything

2.  If so, what will you stock?

and any other comments about the situation, which is the first I've experienced like this in my lifetime.

I am thinking back to my parents generation and WW2, rations etc.

  • I suspect some of my neighbours will be considering this more carefully - their power vanished a few hours ago and isn't expected to be back until around 5pm tomorrow.

  • That's difficult.

I hope you will be ok.

It reminds me of the Winter of Discontent (or possibly the 3 Day Week?) when candles were frequently used for lighting and the only fire anyway was the coal fire in the lounge.

  • Sounds more like the three day week, B. Candlelight, cooking on a newly-purchased gas hob, whistling kettle, blankets. It was cosy if inconvenient.

Hope the engineers can soon safely reconnect everyone and that they too can stay safe.

Do sign up for your electricity distributor's priority services scheme if you think it may help. I find it handy and we have frequent outages as our power is overground to our roadside, being rural!
