Government announcement today that we should stock up on food etc

Here is the BBC article:

Besides extreme weather events there is the danger of cyber attacks and warfare.

We are very far in the UK from self reliance, as a country/set of countries.

I've heard of 'preppers' - people who have already stocked up a great deal of supplies for the event of extreme conditions - often in the US.

There are also people who own bunkers.

This thread is to share ideas about:

1.  Whether you will actually do anything

2.  If so, what will you stock?

and any other comments about the situation, which is the first I've experienced like this in my lifetime.

I am thinking back to my parents generation and WW2, rations etc.

  • From a different angle, I think of a series of fallbacks for Water, Heat and Food sources, each more robust at the expense of time and energy.

(And acknowledging that I cant fight diseases very well by myself. Facemasks, alcohol and so forth can be helpful though)

    Water

Stock up water, but also consider having a system to distill sea water or rain water may be worth. Or even some well natural or artificial.

    Heat

Heat, if you can make a fire from dry logs or material, that could be a fallback from having a few gas tanks (usually cheap), itself a fallback from the "gas line" most have in cities.

Heat can help to clean water, and one may try to have a purifier or at least a few sieve. Also for cooking items.

    Food

Hunt or fish and learn to conserve these for long. Growing vegetables requires harder working stable circumstances (may be doable in many emergency cases as well.)

    --------

One problem is that as others do the same, the situation becomes even harder unless we cooperate.
