Government announcement today that we should stock up on food etc

Here is the BBC article:

Besides extreme weather events there is the danger of cyber attacks and warfare.

We are very far in the UK from self reliance, as a country/set of countries.

I've heard of 'preppers' - people who have already stocked up a great deal of supplies for the event of extreme conditions - often in the US.

There are also people who own bunkers.

This thread is to share ideas about:

1.  Whether you will actually do anything

2.  If so, what will you stock?

and any other comments about the situation, which is the first I've experienced like this in my lifetime.

I am thinking back to my parents generation and WW2, rations etc.

  • There's something I'm still rather confused about.  Here are the things we are meant to 'stockpile'.

I can't work out if we are meant to have these things at home in case we have an emergency where we are still able to stay in the home, therefore they don't all need to be together in one place.

However, the list includes some things that would be irrelevant at home eg. sleeping bags.

So, are we meant to just have the house stocked up or are we meant to have some box or bag full of things to take with us to a place of safety?

    Or both?

    I don't think it's very clear.

    I realise that emergencies vary.

What do other countries do, does anyone know?

  • Both, I think, with the ability to gather that 'away' box or bag together swiftly if we need to leave our home with little notice e.g. airborne contaminants, flood water.

There may also be some extreme situations (e.g. prolonged midwinter energy outage) where we need to live in one designated room for warmth or safety, so some of the 'away' items like sleeping bags may then come into play at home.

    Thank you.

That clarifies things to a degree.
