Government announcement today that we should stock up on food etc

Here is the BBC article:

Besides extreme weather events there is the danger of cyber attacks and warfare.

We are very far in the UK from self reliance, as a country/set of countries.

I've heard of 'preppers' - people who have already stocked up a great deal of supplies for the event of extreme conditions - often in the US.

There are also people who own bunkers.

This thread is to share ideas about:

1.  Whether you will actually do anything

2.  If so, what will you stock?

and any other comments about the situation, which is the first I've experienced like this in my lifetime.

I am thinking back to my parents generation and WW2, rations etc.

  • There's something I'm still rather confused about.  Here are the things we are meant to 'stockpile'.

I can't work out if we are meant to have these things at home in case we have an emergency where we are still able to stay in the home, therefore they don't all need to be together in one place.

However, the list includes some things that would be irrelevant at home eg. sleeping bags.

So, are we meant to just have the house stocked up or are we meant to have some box or bag full of things to take with us to a place of safety?

    Or both?

    I don't think it's very clear.

    I realise that emergencies vary.

What do other countries do, does anyone know?

  • Could this be for storm flooding? Then dependent on where you live. Last year a village near me had a massive flood from the river nearby, they definitely would be advised to keep the kind of stuff they could pick up quickly and leave with. Where I live it’s less likely.

  • Could this be for storm flooding?

    Yes and other natural disasters.

What bothers me is that all the items and advice are bunched together when I think we should have 2 sets of items/advice.

    1.  Something to take away with us if we need to leave the home and

    2.  Stuff to keep in the house if we can stay at home.
