Government announcement today that we should stock up on food etc

Here is the BBC article:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp931m8n3p5o

Besides extreme weather events there is the danger of cyber attacks and warfare.

We are very far in the UK from self reliance, as a country/set of countries.

I've heard of 'preppers' - people who have already stocked up a great deal of supplies for the event of extreme conditions - often in the US.

There are also people who own bunkers.

This thread is to share ideas about:

1.  Whether you will actually do anything

2.  If so, what will you stock?

and any other comments about the situation, which is the first I've experienced like this in my lifetime.

I am thinking back to my parents generation and WW2, rations etc.

  • I love how quickly we’ve jumped into practical mode to support each other—it’s one of our community's biggest strengths. While we figure out what practical things make sense to gradually add to our cupboards, I personally would echo others comments about making sure we are stocking up on our capacity to process this without panicking.
The government is starting to talk about this now because they want the UK to slowly get used to the idea of everyday resilience—much like people do in places like Sweden or Finland. It’s not a signal that everything is collapsing tomorrow; it's an invitation to be quietly prepared over the coming months.  I personally would recommend focus on steady, calm planning as many have commented rather than letting the news cycle spike anxiety.
If I was going to add anything specifically to my shopping list, bearing in mind the greatest problem would be drinking water, a few bottles of water is what I might pickup over the next week or 2.  And as i've already got some empty water containers to fill up if the horizon gets especially problematic some tablets to add to the cleaning water for those containers to disinfect them before pre-filling them again as I've used my stock of tablets up this week when cleaning the jars for making jam and chutney.  If we're getting seriously into the survival mode thing then also I'll replace the lemon juice that i had stored and used up in the aforementioned cooking.  I guess that what I'm saying is that I'm old fashioned enough to be mostly stocked up personally and could probably survive for a month easily on what's already in my cupboards - apart from potable water ,
  • I have a good larder too, I like to cook so have lots of ingredients handy.

If people are worried about what happens if????? Then make a plan of what you'd like everybody else in your block do, think of a list of useful tasks, people like to have someone in charge when things go wrong, you ccan then leave them to go about thier tasks whilst you sit in a chair and "supervise" them. Get men digging latrines and fire pits, going to the river or beach and getting loads of roundish cobbles to line the firpits and collect wood and cut it up so as it can go in the firepits that can then be used both as heating, but for cooking too.

  • personally I am a bit "meh.." about all this   but then i'm 1. probably already reasonably sorted for such events and 2. I really haven't got the energy to get stressed about it all  If something happens there'll probably be some sort of way that it gets sorted out or muddled thro' by digging and piling and burning and stuff.  Seems to me that whilst planning for the worst is important putting more effort into stopping the worst happening is the best investment (notwithstanding this is what the government want people to do because they are admitting there's no choice.  ie being in charge when things go wrong)
