It's a psychological phenomenon know as a "liminal space". Areas that trigger senses in the brain that tell you "you shouldn't be here". It's a survival instinct.
For example;
Part of what triggers this reaction is the lack of populace. Areas that are devoid of life. Your brain starts saying "nothing survives here, so you're probably gonna die if you stay here" and starts sending danger signals.
