Autumn/Fall

As the Nature thread is rather slow to load now as it's a bit cumbersome, and as threads are locked after 6 months, I thought I'd start a thread for the wonderful 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' rather early, as it's not the 1st September yet.

I don't think I've ever been so glad to get one season kicked out the door and see another arrive.

Please share anything autumnal.

I will upload a photo or two when I find them.

  • We are definitely mid-autumn here, it's cold out, 1.5 degrees on the weather station, and the trees are turning aflame, the fungi have reached the mid point, and the brambles which have been very fruitful due to all the rain, have turned.

  • 1.5 degrees on the weather station

It was 20 here yesterday (in the shade).

    What a contrast.

We have the 1st prolonged heavy rain day for months.

    aflame,

    Lovely word.

  • 20! That's like high summer shorts and t-shirts weather round here! The woolies have come out the cupboards and the warmer duvets are on the beds. It feels like the first morning frost is whisperingly close.

I think the climate regions are definitely shifting. Southern England sounds more like France!

  • We were feeding hedgehogs since the spring, but we went away for a few days in August and they never came back. (We had a wildlife camera near it). Sad times. :( They are funny, they make little snuffly noises, which can be weird if you are out in the dark and can hear them but not see them!

Just ordered the bat box, maybe we can move the camera over there to see if it gets used. My daughter wanted one with a camera inside but they were a lot more expensive!

  • We had a 'bat-hotel' attached to one of the outside walls of our house, as we know there are (or have been) bats in the area. Alas, we've not sighted any in the past few years. Slight frown On the other hand, we regularly find hedgehog scat (poo) on paths and other areas in the garden, so there's at least one of those around — we never see or hear it, though, which is a shame but perhaps for the best as that noise might attract attention from cats or foxes.

  • I accidentally disturbed two bats who were resting in the garage/shed door

Wonderful to see although not for the moths.

I am sure they will be fine.

We had the detectors out a few weeks before,

I read that as detectives man detectivewoman detective
    Back to hedgehog for me.

  • I accidentally disturbed two bats who were resting in the garage/shed door on Sunday. Mortified, as they are protected and shouldn't be disturbed, but I did get a rare glimpse of them.  I was just trying to work out what to do (there is a man locally who rescues them, but I didn't have his number to hand), when they flew off. I hope they are okay, it is risky for them to be out in daylight, but hopefully they made it back to the woods. We are a ordering a bat box to put up above that door.

They were perhaps the reason for there only being one moth in/near the trap, but my daughter was ecstatic as she had just got a bat book from the library too. We had the detectors out a few weeks before, trying to listen for them after I saw a flitting silhouette in the gloaming.

  • I was reading that queen bumblebees survive the winter by hibernating. I hope you don't need to hibernate that long. Sometimes it can seem cold, but there is still warmth I hope.

  • We are no longer getting the prolonged winter rain the farmers need!

Same here and the summer drought has affected farmers very badly here (southern England).
