As the Nature thread is rather slow to load now as it's a bit cumbersome, and as threads are locked after 6 months, I thought I'd start a thread for the wonderful 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' rather early, as it's not the 1st September yet.

I don't think I've ever been so glad to get one season kicked out the door and see another arrive.

Please share anything autumnal.

  • On my walk today I noticed horse chestnuts have dropped their seeds, but not seen acorns yet. I looked up at one of the oak trees that usually sends masses of acorns making a crunchy path and eventually noticed some stunted versions of acorns. I am hoping they are still forming and the recent rain has helped.

    There is a large horse chestnut tree not far from where I live, it is currently laden with conkers in their shells but only a few on the ground so far, I wonder if those have been aborted due to lack of rain? It'll be interesting to see how the rest fare, given how dry the ground is around there plus competing with the parent tree for what little water is underground.

    I think it was last year that was a mast year - I remember filling up a whole garden recycling bin with them.

    I wonder whether with the drought and that, the trees will rest.

    I love the acorns.
