Supporting NT grief

In another post I asked for help with catastrophising, prompted by anxiety over a missing cat. It is possible my wife (Lynne) will not get her cat (Gracie) back and I will struggle with supporting Lynne in grief — as I am already struggling to find supportive words as she suffers missing her cat and dealing with the fear that Gracie may not come back. Lynne says it is the 'not knowing' (what has happened to Gracie) that will be worse.

I understand and feel for her worry, but do not know the words to use when Lynne sends me update messages that Gracie still has nit returned, and that she is missing her and cannot sleep.

NB although we are married, we do not live together.

  • Dealing with other people’s trauma is difficult. Sometimes the most cliched responses are the best even though they may seem insufficient. Something like “ thanks for sharing that with me. I am sorry. If there is anything that I can do to please let me know”
