Clothing and sensory overload, what actually works for you?

I’m autistic and for years I struggled with clothing without really understanding why. Labels, seams, certain fabrics, tight collars, heat and the general feeling of some clothes against my skin could become really distracting or overwhelming.

Since my diagnosis, a lot of those experiences have made much more sense to me.

  • I'm not sure if this can be categorised as sensory but apart from t-shirts I can't wear anything that doesn't open at the front, jumpers, sweatshirts, hoodies.. anything you have to put on over your head makes me feel really claustrophobic.
