Anyone else struggling to find a job?

I am a late diagnosed Autistic women (diagnosed nearly a year ago). I have a degree and work experience but still cannot find a job because of the online assessments. I find them so difficult and was wondering if anyone else is struggling with them?

I feel like they don't accurately reflect my capabilities. There was one I did where I had to identify facial expressions every 5 seconds and since I didn't do well on that section my feedback was that I was unlikely to work in a team (which is not true I have worked in many teams successfully before). Another assessment I had for a job opening asked me questions about being a picky eater, if I can handle plans being changed, if I can tell what someone is feeling based on their face, if I can tell when I have upset someone etc. I can understand how some of this will be relevant to working but I can't help but feel these assessments are deliberately made to find out which candidates are Autistic based on the types of questions. Has anyone else had difficulty with these assessments?

  • Hello Hufflepuff.

I can entirely empathise with you on this one - and believe me, this is incredibly personal.

As you point out, it is incredibly unfortunate that the hiring landscape can be nothing short of difficult to navigate, with assessments that do not at all reflect the individual, and snap judgements that fail to examine the whole of a person. It is clear you are dedicated, committed, and genuine in your approach to life, qualities of which are incredibly value.

It looks as though our community has a lot to say on this matter, although in the mean-time, I'd like to leave you with NAS recommended resource, relating to employment:

Employment - A series of NAS guides.

Evenbreak - Award-winning Job board for disabled people - Disability confident employment.

Work for us - The NAS are constantly looking to fill positions, with an emphasis on filling such with autistic individuals.

Going forwards, I wish you the best. This is not at all the easiest position to be in, although, you truly deserve the best.

    Thanks - Zac Mod.
