Anyone else struggling to find a job?

I am a late diagnosed Autistic women (diagnosed nearly a year ago). I have a degree and work experience but still cannot find a job because of the online assessments. I find them so difficult and was wondering if anyone else is struggling with them?

I feel like they don't accurately reflect my capabilities. There was one I did where I had to identify facial expressions every 5 seconds and since I didn't do well on that section my feedback was that I was unlikely to work in a team (which is not true I have worked in many teams successfully before). Another assessment I had for a job opening asked me questions about being a picky eater, if I can handle plans being changed, if I can tell what someone is feeling based on their face, if I can tell when I have upset someone etc. I can understand how some of this will be relevant to working but I can't help but feel these assessments are deliberately made to find out which candidates are Autistic based on the types of questions. Has anyone else had difficulty with these assessments?

  • Assessments and interviews are the bane of my existence. If interviews were kept strictly to the job and my capabilities to do the job, then there would be no issues, but they like to throw unrelated curveball questions in and that always gets me because I can't rehearse or prepare for it beforehand.

I'm a person who hates any sort of change. I've left several decent jobs in the past as a result. I'm all about efficiency and any changes that hinder my ability to be efficient is a deal breaker and I'll walk if it can't be resolved. The most safe and stable I felt was when I was self employed prior to COVID.

It's tough in general to get work at the moment. I know people who always seem to fall backwards into jobs, whilst I was having to compete against countless different candidates for a role.

The ideal would be to indulge a passion/hobby of mine and get paid for it, but we all have dreams.
