Confusing language

How confusing the English language and people's use of it can be will never cease to amaze me.

I went to drop off a prescription at the pharmacy today. When I handed it over he said "is this just to collect when it's ready?". I have no idea what he actually meant by that question - I wouldn't be able to pick it up before it's ready so obviously yes, I will collect when it's ready. I just said yes and left. But it's played on my mind since.

I feel like this kind of thing happens so often, I just can't understand what the other person actually meant.

  • I think he probably meant whether you were dropping it off now and coming back later, rather than waiting around while they prepared it. The wording is still odd though. Something like "Are you coming back to collect it later?" would have made more sense as a lot of everyday phrases only seem clear because everyone has heard them used in the same situation before.

    Usually they ask if I'm waiting if it'll be available. I don't think waiting would have been an option in this scenario so I feel like the question shouldn't have even been a question. He should have just told me I'd get a text when it was ready. But I might be wrong.
