Routine/Focus Help?

Hey Wave tone1,
I thought I would create a post as I would like to know how you all deal with this and what helps.

When I was younger I had routines because of school & college. Now that I haven’t done college or even got a job for 9+ years, I have no routine and I find that I am getting frustrated with myself especially recently.

I have a list of things I would like to do and I plan to do it that day or the next day. But when they day comes I always get distracted with other things other than my task.

For example: I would like to go through my books on my kindle and I plan that. So I start doing a little bit and then end up distracted with doom scrolling, watching tv or playing games. When I realise what I have done, I get so frustrated with myself Sob. I try to say “I will just carry it on tomorrow” but when tomorrow comes I fall in the same cycle.

I have tried making visual lists, using focus apps etc but I can’t seem to make anything work for me SobSob

Can someone help me? I just would like to find things to help me to focus better on my tasks x

I know this feeling well - in the end I found the best way to break this inertia is advance planning - remove the distractions so I have only the thing I want to focus on available for whatever time I want to allocate it.

You may be able to get someone to take your phone for the duration and keep it switched off. Perhaps go to the library or somewhere you will not be tempted to jump onto your computer to get online etc and have some sort of checklist for the things to work through so you have the satisfaction of seeing progress you are making on the day - progress helping incentivise continuing with the focus.

Perhaps get someone to go to the library with you but not interact with you for the time you set aside and they can be part of the obligation to go through with it and also safeguard to keep you on track.

With practice you will get better at self-motivating and controlling your own progress.

It sounds like it is ADHD which is stealing your focus - are you diagnosed with this? If so it may be asking your GP about some meds to help with focus.
