Eye contact

I always had a problem with eye contact. It was almost physically painful to maintain eye contact with people. The body language experts seemed to be of the opinion that lack of eye contact denoted dishonesty or insincerity. So I worked very hard with my masking skills and eventually mastered the art of eye contact.

The problem is that I seem to make people uncomfortable with my eye contact, I don't know why, too intense, obviously masking, whatever the reason I don't think I really mastered it. I think far from projecting honesty and sincerity I could possibly be projecting the look of a demented serial killer :-)

What experiences have people had with mastering eye contact?
