When is it time to change jobs?

I've heard it's quite a common autistic thing to move jobs frequently/make rash decisions about leaving a job.

I'm considering trying to find a new job and want to be more certain that this is the right decision. 

Has anyone got any insights or personal experience about when moving jobs was the right (or wrong) choice?

There are risks to either staying put or moving jobs.

If anyone has any thoughts they would be much appreciated!

  • I've had the same job for 22.5 years.

    I know the people I work with, I know the routines, I have full holidays that enable me to get away more often. They're all reasons why I stay.

    Truth be told, I hate it. I hate being there. I hate the toxic work atmosphere. My meltdowns have gotten worse in the last few months, but I think people know me now and expect them. No one I ever work with, well very few of them, have given me a hard time.

    But, because I know the people and the routine, it sort of overrides the negatives. When I told my old manager, a guy that saw many meltdowns, that I was on RTC and what it might mean, or meant regarding my past anger bouts, he calmly told me he never thought less of me for them. Whether he meant it, or whether he just said it to reassure me, I don't know. That would possibly be my trust issues talking.

    I don't think I'd enjoy any job I ended up doing really, and it's too late in life to push for the sort of job I might enjoy. So I stick to what I know and the people I know.

    It's been harder this year. It's this year that I started to realise what I may be. I discovered that the increasing bouts of depression and anxiety were possibly autistic burnout. I'm now on RTC and awaiting an assessment. There's one woman I work with that's been a godsend to me. She listens and she understands. I often tell her she must be annoyed with me by now, but she still listens to my rambles. I wouldn't get that at a new place.

    I have about 15 or 16 years left to work. If I get diagnosed I'll go through Occupational Health and maybe get assistance to help me.

    Everyone is different though,  , and you have to do what makes it easiest for you. I have also heard that autistic people switch jobs a lot.
