Burnout and Occupation

Awaiting assessment - late diagnosed. Facing a monumental burnout.  Lots of life transitions/events and the menopause culminating has left me facing a burnout situation.

Not currently working.  Dependent children at home. Husband working.

At an age where I could be considered very early retired.  I don't have to work (I used to) admin jobs which did not match my level of education.  I feel low that I never

achieved my potential (whatever that might have been).  Too tired and burn out to consider retraining in another career (even if I knew what that would be).

I do attend an activity group one day a week but apart from that I don't attend/participate in anything.

I would like to get to a position where I volunteer once or twice a week for a few hours.  I think it might be a way off unfortunately.

I need to speak to a professional as I believe I might have some form of adhd overlap as well as autism.

I am in a loop of not deciding what to try (in spite of having a few ideas).

Then in the loop of lost opportunity - if I did X then I couldn't do Y.  I get bored of things quickly (apart from my special creative interest hobby which I cannot do all the time especially in my current state of mind).

I have tried a few things only to quit a few weeks later.  Still a few things to try but now I'm worried about trying them/investing in them and getting bored and quitting again.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm suited to. For example something might be too quiet as well as too chaotic.  Also have the perfectionist streak.

Wanting something straightforward then wanting something slightly challenging.

I seem affected by who is there - I am most happy amongst others with neuro divergency.  I think this is an influencing factor.

Asking myself what's the point and telling myself it isn't making a difference.

Not sure how to get out of this vicious loop I seem to be facing.

Do I let more time pass?

How do I find more contentment?  Others around seem content doing very little but I feel restless.

So many contradictions.

Wondering if I'm lacking in Dopamine - perhaps I'm after dopamine hits.

So many questions and seemingly few answers.

Can anyone relate?

  • Dear Wandawitch,

I am really sorry to hear that you are currently going through burnout that can be challenging to experience. I am glad that you have shared this with the community, I hope that it helps build a small supportive community behind you.

I thought I would share some resources that could be helpful:

The NAS also run a services directory. You can use the search function to find activities, support and social opportunities that are available in your local area

I think it is a wonderful idea to look for voluntary roles! Volunteering has been one of my greatest joys and always recommend people find roles that they are passionate about. However, it is completely understandable that you don't feel ready for this yet and it is important that you prioritise your own wellbeing. I thought I would share a helpful link regarding volunteering that you could look at if and when you feel ready:

I hope that some of this is helpful.

    Take care,

    Olivia Mod
