This thread is dedicated to  as he mentioned an old thread on this subject.

So, please share any 'wise' old sayings.

I'll start.

'A stitch in time saves nine'.

I'm curious about whether anyone under 50 mends (eg sews) their clothes to make them last in these days of cheap throwaways items.

  • My mum still has a complete sewing kit, from when she used to make and repair clothes in the 1970s. My dad was working but the pay wasn't great so they had to economise and make full use of whatever they could afford.

    I can and do fix buttons on shirts, coats, pyjamas, etc. and repair small tears in clothes where possible. I've taken after my parents and will wear clothes until they're no longer usable.

    I wish I'd been taught more practical skills at school. Woodwork, metalwork and pottery were fun, but I've no idea why they were on the curriculum. "Home economics" was apparently girls-only, even at the progressive school I attended. And while I did do Applied Mathematics at A-Level, the 'applied' part seemed to be just for engineering, not for finance. I've subsequently learnt how to cook, but it took until well into adulthood to understand how money worked.
