Confession Of The Day

I stole this from another thread.

Is there anything you feel rather ashamed of having done or not done etc?

Mine is:

I have started but not finished The Remains of the Day, Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun (Kazuo Ishiguro books).

and many other 'worthy' novels.

Anguished

I do have greater sins I might share at a later date.

Thinking

  • 2. Need for routine/predictability. Any unexpected changes to your routine can cause stress. Routines feel safe and help us to cope.Blush

  • I'm happy you didn't delete it. It's a perfect place for oversharing and infodumping :)

  • I'm not an astronomer, so there is a lot, that I don't know. But there is also a huge lot, that they don't know. Neil Tyson DeGrasse wrote in his book, that astronomers must always be humble, because of the vastness of what they don't know yet about the universe. I almost finished his book, the second I got. But recently I'm so terribly exhausted that I had no capacity for any new information. Now it's my holidays, maybe I get a proper rest to be able to function.

  • Sorry for these long and probably stupid confessions

You are far too intelligent to say something 'stupid'.

  • I looked into the mirror and got impression, that I look like Sir Isaac Newton, my hair (goes naturally like the wigs that men wore in those times) and something in my facial features. It's only about appearance, I'm far from being the genius he was. And I'm female. I'm not sure if it's positive, for a female to appear somehow similar to Newton, it feels strange to me. Just confessing here.

I had some deeper thoughts about universe today. Sat alone after dinner and my mind flew out to the vastness of space. And I was wondering about various theories about it. So there is the Dyson Spheres theory, that stars suddenly vanish without supernova. There is the cosmological constant, universe, the space expands and this expansion is accelerating. But the speed of light is constant. So if the speed of light is slower, than the speed of expansion of space, then there is a point, where the object emiting light is too far for its light to reach us. Whether the object was a star or other object emitting light, like galaxy, dwarf galaxy, quasar etc is a different topic. So I think, that this may be an explanation for sudden disappearances of some objects in the sky without supernova,  rather than alien civilisation harvesting the star's energy and exhausting it to zero.

Another topic that I was thinking, maybe it's stupid (I'm not Newton after all) - I red, that 2/3 galaxies in our observable universe spin clockwise, and one third- counter clockwise. Best explanation from astronomers is here the dark energy, but as nobody really knows what it is and how it works, it's a hypothetical matter, it all stays magic. There is also the theory,  that we are living in a huge black hole being hosted by other- bigger universe. An argument against it is that the black hole should have a point of infinite gravity, and not be same everywhere,  like our observable universe. Observable! We have no idea what is beyond that. So if our universe is located in a black hole and the galaxies strangely spin 1/3 to 2/3 in both directions,  maybe it's possible that maybe it's a merger of two black holes, which influence the directions of the matter spinning. Sorry for these long and probably stupid confessions

  • Yes to this! I would rather just eat the cold things on offer or maybe put some cheese in a roll!

  • Like a sit down meal has rules that make sense, a bbq on the other hand: when can we start eating? I don’t eat sausages or burgers so what can I have? Where is everyone sitting? How long can we stay? I don’t know, I make up a few questions when I’m at the event.

  • Buffet usually equals things I like, I’m up for that!

  • The problem for me with buffet's is knowing if I can eat the stuff or not and then often when I do find something I can eat, some clarty numpty has put meat tongs or prawn cocktail spoons in it.

  • Relaxed

I've been hesitant to confess (1st confession).
  • I've been hesitant to confess (1st confession).

I read so slowly that some books take me years to understand and complete (2nd confession).

  • When I first started this thread, I tried to delete it (confession of the day) because I thought it wouldn't be popular.

I'm so glad that it has proved me wrong.

    Thank you everyone.

On the slightly tangential subject of BBQs and buffets, my limited diet (mainly potato and cheese!) makes these impossible things for me.

I've put food in my mouth without knowing what it is (a buffet lacks labels) and looked for a place to spit it out!

  • I have bought expansions for board games I haven't played the main game of (or played only once), just because I like the look of them.

(This is mainly wingspan, as I want the different bird cards).

  • Buffets are a mixed bag, it depends on how busy they are with other people. If it's busy I will just say I'm not hungry or wait. If it's quiet I can normally manage, especially if it means not interacting with others at a party or just looking after my kids getting them something.

The walk up to a buffet is the worst part, that is terribly anxiety inducing and might stop me going up at all. (Will I find the plates? / go the wrong way? / take the wrong thing?). My husband might get me something then, if he's noticed.

I am not fussy and will try things, so not the same issues as Roy! But I do know the walk of shame from trying to find anything for the kids to eat (and sometimes having back up food in the bag for them is really handy!) I will try things, especially if no one else has eaten it and it's veggy.

Where as if it's a set meal, I will generally eat much more as it's on my plate already and wouldn't want to waste it!

  • Sorry to jump in, I find buffets have no rules, you can be expecting a certain type of food, some of which is comfort foods. When you start to walk along the line of food, there is nothing that is suitable, it then feels like doing the walk of shame. Someone will make a comment about fussy eating and children.

I remember reading Sara Gibbs book, she struggled at gatherings with buffets , her wise old grandmother always kept a Tupperware box of pizza slices in her handbag, wise granny would slide her a couple of slices.

  • Overthinking

You have me overthinking this now Thinking

the seven deadly sins of autism.

    2 = ?

  • I started thinking of the seven deadly sins of autism. I could start with….

    1. Overthinking.   A process an autistic person uses to properly explore every possible aspect of a problem and then come to a well thought out conclusion.  Autistic person is made to feel bad for overthinking everything.
  • As a child, I started but never actually finished reading The Lord Of The Rings by J.R.R Tolkein.

    Ditto.

  • As a child, I started but never actually finished reading The Lord Of The Rings by J.R.R Tolkein. Compared to The Hobbit, it was sooo long and tedious for me at that age.

I picked up and read through the original Dune books by Frank Herbert in the 1980s, off the back of the David Lynch film of the first book. I did make it through those, but ho boy were they wordy!

By contrast, I really enjoyed Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat books, possibly because they had less exposition and more action, plus more humour. And I also enjoyed several of my late father's collection of books by Isaac Asimov, and plan to re-read those at some point in the coming year. I even enjoyed the translation of The Monkey King, possibly because I'd watched the TV adaptation Monkey Magic as a kid and could picture the characters better as a result.
