People watching mobile phone videos in public

I just find it totally unacceptable, I can be sitting somewhere quietly and all of a sudden, someone is watching a video on their phone with the sound on very loud. They seem totally oblivious to their surroundings or just don’t care.

Most of the time it’s just inane influencers selling tat or one video after another with loud background music. I had an incident recently where someone had finished watching the video and left the phone playing away on their table.
I just find it totally overwhelming and makes it impossible to concentrate on anything.
I occasionally listen to YouTube, I wear headphones, it’s quite easy.

Is it just me and I’m being overly sensitive?

  • I wouldn't go that far, but if someone zipped past and swiped their phone I wouldn't shed any tears.

  • I occasionally encounter people in the park across the road from me who have their phones on loudspeaker, watching or listening to something and being totally oblivious to their surroundings. At least in that scenario, I am walking and will soon be away from them. But it doesn't surprise me at all that phone thefts are on the rise. Mine stays in my pocket, and only comes out if I want to use the Merlin app to identify some birdsong, or the Seek app to identify a plant or fungus, then goes back.

  • I would approve of capital punishment for anyone who does it in addition to talking on loud speaker.

  • It's infuriating. The worst part is you can now get really good wired headphones(earbuds) at stores like B and M and Home Bargains, unlike 15 years ago, when even one for £8 could be hit or miss with a horrible tinny reverb, which brings me to the conclusion anyone who does this is an *expletive*.

The worst one was some *expletive* who was watching TikToks full blast while I was waiting in an A and E at 3am. If someone is truly watching something fine (like a documentary or podcast), but nothing is worse than having a head injury when some muppets phone is going from *soft girl voice* "Here is how you can find Pichu in Legends Arceus" to *loud male voice* "HEY BRO LETS TRY A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT WHERE I URINATE ON A STREET LOL".

  • No I think it's so extremely rude and selfish too, but more people seem to do it now and it's awful. I think you have to apply the 'everyone' rule -if everyone did it, it would be awful and too noisy so you shouldn't. It's forcing it on other people. Headphone should be mandatory or kicked off the train/out the café etc.

I was in a dentist waiting room, and gave the kids my phone to play games to keep them occupied, but the rule in public is sound turned off. Then some grown up came and did what you describe. I was really annoyed that my children were being more considerate of others than a grown up!
