3 weeks on

It has been 3 weeks since I was diagnosed with ASD, I spent the first week trying to come to terms with the diagnosis, despite believing I was autistic for the best part of the last 5 years.

Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that I am stimming more and that my ability to feel emotions has been severely impacted, I am not sure what is going on and wondering if this is normal?

  • I think this is the post diagnosis regression, I think it seems to vary, some are impacted a lot. I think you become even more hyper-aware of everything which can make it tricker to cope with things you did before. It's like you suddenly can't hide things any more you weren't aware you were hiding.

Go easy on yourself, and try remember times when you did manage to cope better, I find it helps a little, telling yourself you can do things, and just have breaks after.  It's also like permission not to have to hide some parts of yourself and trying to find a way to relax and be okay with that can be tricky too.

I did a lot of listening to podcasts after as hearing people be talk about it helped a lot.  It takes time to settle, like a whole other acceptance journey you didn't realise you started. Best wishes.

  • Hello Golf23,

Congratulations on getting your diagnosis. The NAS website has information, practical and multimedia resources about how autistic people and their families may feel after a diagnosis and the support that may be available.
