DSA assessment

Hi all,

I've just received an email to say I'm entitled to Disabled Students Allowance for my part-time Open Uni degree and need to have a 1-2 hour needs assessment to find out what they can offer me. I'm feeling really nervous about this as I was only diagnosed a few months back and have always 'managed' in education. I can get overwhelmed and upset but I find it hard to say if that's due to the autism or if that's normal for uni study. It's bringing back my feelings of being a fraud and not really being entitled to any help.

I wanted to know if anyone else has been through the assessment and could offer any advice?

  • I've been through the assessment twice! My masters degree differed significantly from my undergraduate so I needed different support so asked to get reassessed. I'll go find my old post on it again in a second and repost here because I gave a very thorough review previously but basically:

    It's the only assessment where they really want you to get everything they can give you. Be as open as possible, and be open to getting things from them that you may not have considered. Some of the things they suggested I wasn't sure I needed but have been really useful. In my experience they're generally pretty knowledgeable and they really want to help.

    I can't find my old post other than a few detailed ones about brain in hand, but here is what I currently use with dsa

    An autism specialist mentor 

    An autism specialist study skills assistant

    Apps like Brain in Hand which help with scheduling, unexpected changes, and organisation and also have coaching and use support

    Some software to help with notetaking/organisation, particularly transcription software as my auditory processing is completely trash so lectures are a nightmare, although that might be less of a concern for an open university course?

    noise cancelling headphones 

    And the training in order to use all of the software
