Banter

Never been able to do it, the whole joking back and forth thing. It’s rife in the workplace, but i can’t do it, never been able to. Am wondering if this is something other autistic people struggle with, or if it’s just me? Now, if somebody wants a deep conversation i can do that. I watch other people do banter effortlessly. It’s a bit of a mystery to me, and when i have tried to joke back (and failed) i just feel false.

  • I mirror heavily so I can easily get dragged into something I'd usually avoid. Obviously I have a few well rehearsed phrases and mild insults that get trotted out

I enjoy a deeper conversation but I rarely get the chance.

If I'm at work and there is a loud "confrontational" conversation going on out of eye sight, I can't easily tell if it's in jest or not. It such a relief when someone laughs or adds a sarcastic tone
