Unmasking.

I got diagnosed last year and now I’m very interested in unmasking - personal examples being: expressing my humour, fidgeting out in the open, not maintaining eye contact all the time, initiating physical contact, and also making misunderstandings and mistakes of mine into something funny instead of having to feel embarrassed and like I want to off myself. I’d love to hear experiences of fellow autists unmasking and gaining a sense of freedom (and belonging?)

  • I was ready to flip the lid, Monday evening, in Bray; when the Northbound DART line was delayed; indefinitely. Due to a broken train North of Connolly Station. Seeing some other, bizare, specimens of humanity there drove me insane.

Tuesday, after returning from the bus I booked from Dublin Airport, I had to spend ninety minutes in the Community Transport Bus; with ones from the Special Needs group, and an Elderly group. All while the driver played Downtown Country. At least it was just £2, and the driver had enough change; all I had, in Sterling, was a tenner. (the rest were twenties)

Today, when starting the Insignia I got last Thursday, she keeps stalling; when I want to go. Constantly pressing the clutch, and ready to explode.

My unmasking method is to be up late, like now. I heed to ease off the pressure valve. Also, remembering HALT. Don't get too hungry, angry, lonely or tired.
