Any Musicians

Any musicians here?

As a child I learn music and participated in Brass bands and choirs.  I have recently tried Brass again, but cannot read the music fast enough and get the message from brain to my fingers quick enough, follow the time changes, or sometumes hit the note. I guess I expected to be able to play close to how I remember.

Is it just tim Or maybe I can no longer do the quicker tunes. Processing definately seems to take longer just in the norm day to day.

  • Good question.  It is more pronounced with an instrument. There are more processes going on. One of the reasons for starting choir again was an unsucessful earlier attempt at replaying an instrument in an orchestra again.  Just my voice to work on, then pitch my part and fit it to the other parts. It still has its difficulties as different parts have different harmonies. With instruments, one instrument may have several parts /different octaves, then diffrrent instruments with their parts, on top of which you read the music, then that processed information you have to transfer to your motor process of mouth and hands, eyes and ears etc

  • Thanks, I do kind of hooe so. The tempo and time changes, and quaver heavy pieces are a struggle at the mo

  • I play piano, and whilst a lot of my playing is pure muscle memory, I find if I'm going back to a piece I haven't played in a long time, I have to go back to the sheet music, and play at a much slower tempo than it is supposed to be played at. It can take a few days or weeks, but it comes back to me quicker than it took me to learn it in the first place. Maybe it will come back to you too, given enough time?

  • Hiya! I'm a bit of a musician (a bit embarrassed to call myself that as I'm pretty much entirely self-taught). I know what you mean about getting the message from brain to fingers! I've never really read music - I learn, play and compose by ear. Sometimes I think having to read music puts an extra layer of processing between the sound I want to make and the sound I am actually making! I'm better at getting feedback from whatever instrument I'm playing (I'm fairly mediocre at quite a few of them now!), learning what goes where and when, than trying to process through sheet music scores.

Do you find there's a difference between singing and playing an instrument? Do you have the same processing layer with both or is it more pronounced with an instrument? That would be an interesting thing to explore.
