Nature thread

I though it might be nice to have a thread that we can take into the summer and beyond, as the Spring thread will soon be redundant.

Please remember not to upload an image in the same post as words or it might break the thread - please add your words by replying to the image.

Thank you.

Yesterday  sent me down a rabbit hole when she mentioned this book on the 3 Good Things thread:

https://lithub.com/a-book-to-conjure-nature-when-we-need-it-most/

I then looked at this book:

www.thelostwords.org/.../

The reason for the book made me sad:

“When the most recent edition of the Oxford Junior Dictionary — widely used in schools around the world — was published, a sharp-eyed reader soon noticed that around forty common words concerning nature had been dropped. The words were no longer being used enough by children to merit their place in the dictionary. The list of these ‘lost words’ included acorn, adder, bluebell, dandelion, fern, heron, kingfisher, newt, otter, and willow. Among the words taking their place were attachment, blog, broadband, bullet-point, cut-and-paste, and voice-mail…."

Please add anything related to nature that interests you.

Thank you.

  • I was putting out food for the hedghogs a couple of hours ago when I glimpsed a frog leaping from behind one of the terracotta pots I leave the food in. Last year I found a toad in one of my gardening boots but sadly had to move it as I needed the boots. I wish I had the skill of   to photograph wildlife! I'm too slow moving to grab a camera and its not practical leaving one outside when I'm gardening as I'm likely to bury it [which is what happens to my trowels and secateurs[ . Ideas welcome. One reader suggested the much-derided smart specs - I suppose I could take out the lens.

  • It's just my smart phone, as it's in my pocket and I might be able to get it out in time for a picture.

But yeah, I'm not gardening as such so there isn't as big a risk of it falling out my pocket! Maybe even having a case that has one of those connectors to you?

Mostly the insects are easier -moths out the trap are a little sleepy and sedated, giving me a chance to take a picture. Larger animals are trickier, mostly then it's about luck. I've been using the optical zoom, and cropping photos, so they aren't print quality, but suffice for online and id-ing things.

Sometimes you just don't have a phone/camera with you, then I just enjoy those moments. Sometimes they are the most joyful.

...what a gift for future archaeologists - I can imagine a 25th century revival of Time Team getting very excited,
