Nature thread

I though it might be nice to have a thread that we can take into the summer and beyond, as the Spring thread will soon be redundant.

Please remember not to upload an image in the same post as words or it might break the thread - please add your words by replying to the image.

Thank you.

Yesterday  sent me down a rabbit hole when she mentioned this book on the 3 Good Things thread:

https://lithub.com/a-book-to-conjure-nature-when-we-need-it-most/

I then looked at this book:

www.thelostwords.org/.../

The reason for the book made me sad:

“When the most recent edition of the Oxford Junior Dictionary — widely used in schools around the world — was published, a sharp-eyed reader soon noticed that around forty common words concerning nature had been dropped. The words were no longer being used enough by children to merit their place in the dictionary. The list of these ‘lost words’ included acorn, adder, bluebell, dandelion, fern, heron, kingfisher, newt, otter, and willow. Among the words taking their place were attachment, blog, broadband, bullet-point, cut-and-paste, and voice-mail…."

Please add anything related to nature that interests you.

Thank you.

  • We were just having lunch when a sparrow hawk (F) tried to join us catching a blackbird just outside the window! It was fast I only saw it when it flew off again. (I don't think it got it's takeaway).

  • You are great at identifying them Cinnabar. People often see sparrow hawks and other birds of prey near my home. Sometimes I see them but I wouldn’t be sure that I’m identifying them correctly. I need more practice but it’s not easy to catch the identifying features.

Today I saw a pod of porpoises in the lough. They came well out of the water although they weren’t taking huge leaps.

  • Thank you so much, I do enjoy it! There are a lot of factors that can help when they aren't sitting still, like size, silhouette, speed, location. (Though once after a failed catch it sat in the banister just outside the window for ages!)

It's funny, I've only seen a female though, and that's very rare, never seen a male!

I am very envious of your porpoises, never seen them! Must have been totally amazing to see them!
