Nature thread

I though it might be nice to have a thread that we can take into the summer and beyond, as the Spring thread will soon be redundant.

Please remember not to upload an image in the same post as words or it might break the thread - please add your words by replying to the image.

Thank you.

Yesterday  sent me down a rabbit hole when she mentioned this book on the 3 Good Things thread:

https://lithub.com/a-book-to-conjure-nature-when-we-need-it-most/

I then looked at this book:

www.thelostwords.org/.../

The reason for the book made me sad:

“When the most recent edition of the Oxford Junior Dictionary — widely used in schools around the world — was published, a sharp-eyed reader soon noticed that around forty common words concerning nature had been dropped. The words were no longer being used enough by children to merit their place in the dictionary. The list of these ‘lost words’ included acorn, adder, bluebell, dandelion, fern, heron, kingfisher, newt, otter, and willow. Among the words taking their place were attachment, blog, broadband, bullet-point, cut-and-paste, and voice-mail…."

Please add anything related to nature that interests you.

Thank you.

  • That's amazing, I didn't know you could climb the abbey. (Though I'm afraid of heights so your photo is still the closest I'd get.) You would have had a great view of the Eildon hills.

Right enough, it would have been the Border Book Festival, and it must be the middle of the Melrose festival then too. Most of the towns have their own festivals, starting from early June I believe. I hope the weather stays pleasant for you!

  • Yes everything is horse related!

A lot of events centre around Reiver times and the loss of all the fighting age men at the battle of Flodden, and ceremonial riding of the boundaries.  It is quite something for hundreds of horses parading through the various towns to cheers, and each town has there bunting up with their town colours. But it can be a pain if it catches you out and the main road and shops are shut, we tend to avoid it all!

You should be mostly okay now though, there was a cluster last weekend of all the towns you mentioned, but then it's more spread out and probably won't bother you now!

  • Yes we discovered that, we popped into Selkirk to find it was mostly closed as they had some horse things going on. We were also in Peebles where they were preparing for some other thing which also seemed horse related.
