Autism can be expensive

After many years of use, I decided that my Summer jacket was now too shabby. Yesterday, I went shopping, looking for a light, informal jacket suitable for warmish weather. I tend to feel uncomfortable outside in just shirtsleeves, and where do you stow all the stuff you need to take with you? I buy clothes largely on feel, as one of my major sensory problems is texture and synthetic fibre textiles are unbearable to touch. There were some nice-looking lightweight jackets available, but they felt truly horrible to touch. This was repeated in a number of shops. Then I found a jacket that felt fine, nice colour, good fit, ideal. Of course it was 100% linen and three times the price of any of the others. I bought it, just thankful to have found something I could stand to wear. Autism can be expensive!

  • I have a similar issue to you in that I can’t bear synthetic fabrics near my skin. Apart from perhaps the lightest summer clothes that are made of linen or cotton, most women’s clothes are synthetic, even those in knitwear departments. It costs a fortune now to buy knitwear in wool or tops that aren’t made of polyester or whatever. I agree autism can be expensive!

  • Knit wear is a nightmare, even making it yourself is mega expensive.

One of the things I dislike about this time of year is getting the right sleeve length, I don't like bare arms, I don't like cap or short sleeves., I like 3/4 or long sleeves.

I've been clothes shopping the last couple fo days and it's all dresses, I don't wear dresses and the in colours seem to be mint green and brown, to me brown is an autumn winter colour, not a spring summer one.

I seemed to be joined in the clothes shops by a lot of other older women, looking for tops that would cover their nipples!

  • I like 3/4 sleeves too. They are very practical because they cover arms yet they leave the wrists exposed which means they don’t catch in things or get wet. They can be suitable for summer, yet can be warm enough for winter.

It’s so difficult to find anything suitable with 3/4 length sleeves, in fact I find it difficult to find anything to wear that’s suitable at all.

I don’t wear dresses either and I don’t like brown for summer. Maybe we’ll have spring yellow for autumn, a colour I don’t like for clothes either.

  • I quite often don't like the style that is 'in season' in shops, but if you get lucky and it's a good year that you do like, you can get several items.

I'm quite often like this, nothing then I'll find several things and I know it's worth getting them as it can be a while before you find anything again.
